Kansas Senator Samuel Brownback

In a 2004 press release regarding Teaching American History grants, Senator Brownback stated: “It is imperative that our Kansas students not only understand math, science and English but also have a sound knowledge of American history. I am pleased that Kansas continues to be a leader in this regard.” He continued, “Understanding history and the principles upon which this country was founded is essential not only for the benefit of our society but for the personal development of our nation’s students. Brownback also supported legislation establishing a National Museum of African American History and Culture within the Smithsonian Institution.  In connection with his sponsorship of this legislation, he stated:  “This museum will reflect the breadth and depth of African American history, and will capture the essence of freedom and liberty.” He continued, “It will serve as a catalyst for racial reconciliation in this country.
