Illinois Senator Barack Obama

In his Selma Voting Rights March Commemoration (2007), Senator Barack Obama stated that we as we address issues today, we need to understand our history in the context of the great civil rights struggles and the First Principle of equality

I’m here because somebody marched. I’m here because you all sacrificed for me. I stand on the shoulders of giants. . . . .
There are still battles that need to be fought; some rivers that need to be crossed. Like Moses, the task was passed on to those who might not have been as deserving, might not have been as courageous, find themselves in front of the risks that their parents and grandparents and great grandparents had taken. . . .  What do we do in order to fulfill that legacy; to fulfill the obligations and the debt that we owe to those who allowed us to be here today?
Now, I don’t think we could ever fully repay that debt. I think that we’re always going to be looking back, but there are at least a few suggestions that I would have in terms of how we might fulfill that enormous legacy. The first is to recognize our history. John Lewis talked about why we’re here today. But I worry sometimes – we’ve got black history month, we come down and march every year, once a year. We occasionally celebrate the various events of the Civil Rights Movement, we celebrate Dr. King’s birthday, but it strikes me that understanding our history and knowing what it means, is an everyday activity. . . .
Second thing that the Joshua generation needs to understand is that the principles of equality that were set forth and were battled for have to be fought each and every day. It is not a one-time thing.

"America's Survival Guide is a bold and insightful work that should be taken seriously by those concerned with the future of America. We ignore it at our peril."
Congressman Joe Knollenberg

“Judge Warren eloquently describes the amnesia affecting our democratic republic. The historical section provides a rich teaching resource for American history and civics. A must read for teachers and students alike.” – Amy Bloom, Oakland Schools History/Social Studies Consultant

“Finally!  Someone addresses the concerns many of us Americans have and approaches them from an apolitical point of view.  Michael Warren speaks from a position of reasoned authority and examines the U.S. landscape from politics, to the courts, to the schools, to the media.  This expert on law and education, does not leave the reader in a state of depression but rather offers potential solutions that all can embrace.  This is a book for all who hope for a better future in our country, and that should include all of us.”  Frank Beckmann, WJR 760 AM

“A comprehensive tour de force of what is going wrong with our republic and how to make it right. It does not matter if you come from the ideological left, right or straight-down the middle – this book is worth reading if you love America and cherish our freedom.” – Tom Watkins, Former Superintendent of Public Instruction and Director of the Department of Mental Health for the State of Michigan

“Judge Michael Warren has filled these pages with some of the best ideas emerging from our history – ideas that he argues form the very foundations of America’s political and social life.  Meant to stir us from a civic lethargy, Warren provokes as he educates.  Indeed, there is much here worth talking about, arguing over, and acting upon.  Whether you agree or disagree with him, Judge Warren has given policy makers, teachers and students a powerful picture of America’s intellectual past to guide the present as we shape the future.”  – Bob Bain, University of Michigan, Associate Professor

"America's Survival Guide describes with detail and passion the dangers that come from abandoning the "First Principles" upon which this nation was founded. But this important book offers more than a diagnosis and despair, it presents a reasoned program for restoring the U.S. Constitution its proper place at the center of American society and government. The book draws on history, politics and education to make a powerful case for freedom and fighting for it."

--John Engler, former Governor of Michigan
